Classes
How big are your class sizes? ︎
Our class size ranges from 2 to 8 people. Each session will have students of varying skills and experiences. In a typical class we have some students doing handbuilding, some on the throwing wheels, and some doing glazing. As the class size tends to be small, our students will receive a customized curriculum and individual attention.
Handbuilding: 8 pax
Potter’s Wheel: 3 pax
Can children come to class? ︎
Anyone of any age is welcome to visit us or come to a Saturday class. We ask that children under 12 are supervised at all times by their parent or guardian while in the studio. Please note that our regular weekly classes are aimed for adults over the age of 12. If your child is under 12, you might want to consider contacting us towards arranging a private or customized group session!
What kind of facilities do you have? ︎
We have 3 pottery wheels, a slab-roller, a kiln, a spray booth for advanced students, plenty of banding wheels, tools shelving and large stable tables for heavier works. The studio is in a large well-ventilated space, and we also have our own bathroom with a shower.
What should I wear to class? ︎
The workshop is comfortably ventilated with ceiling fans, so you will just need to show up in comfortable attire and shoes. We have aprons that you are welcome to use, and you are welcome to bring your own! Some students like to bring a change of clothes to change into after work.
Do you have free trial lessons? ︎
No, we do not. However, we offer an introductory hands-on workshop (3 hours) for new students or beginners every month, to experience working with clay at Pinch.
What does the course pricing include? ︎
The course pricing for the introductory are all-inclusive. Regular classes are priced lower as materials and firing are charged separately based on quantity and size (~ $10 per object). The prices stated includes a recommended amount as a deposit to cover materials and firing of your works and anything unused is returned to you at the end of the course. So feel free to experiment!
What happens when I have to miss a scheduled class? ︎
To benefit most from the course we would recommend you to attend classes consecutively. However your sessions are valid for 2, 4 or 6 months depending on the number of sessions you have purchased.
As throwing is best honed through consecutive classes and we have a high demand for the usage of our wheels, these sessions are consecutive.
Is it convenient for me to drive there? ︎
Yes, there are plenty of un-sheltered parking lots at $0.60 every half hourly.
Are there any food and drink options nearby? ︎
There is a coffee shop with drinks and hawker food three minutes away. If not, there are plenty of other options at Kim Keat Palm Hawker Center ten minutes away with a large selection of halal and non-halal food. Our studio is also a twenty minute walk to Toa Payoh Lorong 8 — an even larger hawker center where you can find a nice cold chendol.
I have no prior experience with ceramics. Where do I start? ︎
It does not matter if you have no experience as all our classes are designed to accommodate all levels - beginner or expert. We would however recommend starting with 8 sessions of hand-building as you can learn the essential basics before taking on a more challenging technique- throwing. Depending on your availability, we would recommend you to join our Introductory workshop before signing up for our Regular classes.
What is the studio’s teaching approach like? ︎
We have a curriculum that will guide you in mastering the basics of each technique. However it is tailored to your commitment and without rigid schedules.
If you have choosen to purchase 8 sessions for example, you would be able to learn at least 2-3 hand-building techniques and 1 glazing technique.
We would like you to have the chance to try your hand at different approaches to clay. After which you can delve deeper into techniques of your choice to create independantly. Techniques range from various handbuilding skills to throwing and sculpting methods, as well as glazing techniques like painting, dipping and spraying.
Will I be able to master the skills sufficiently after each course? ︎
All skills are honed with practice, and you will develop progressively over the course of the sessions. We are a chill, artistic, learning environment that welcomes different students! Some come to master a skill in hand-building or throwing, others in glazing and painting. Some students come with an aim to explore and develop their own artistic sensibility of working with clay and plaster as a sculptural medium.
Will I get to keep all the pieces I have made? ︎
Yes, you will get to keep every piece you have made! Works will be ready for collection within 2 weeks after completion. We request that your collect your works within 3 months of completion.
